DENVER (AP) - Andrew Brunette and Alex Tanguay scored goals in a 1:36 span midway through the second period to help the Colorado Avalanche beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in an exhibition game Tuesday night.
Brunette tied it with 7:36 left in the period, lifting a shot over James Howard's left shoulder after taking Joe Sakic's pass from behind net. Tanguay put Colorado (3-0-1) ahead with a short-handed goal with 6 minutes remaining, tipping a shot past Howard with teammate Cody McCormick serving a double-minor for roughing.
David Aebischer stopped 26 shots for the Avalanche, allowing only Dan Lacouture's goal early in the first period. Howard made 30 saves for Detroit (3-2-1).
The first period ended with a skirmish after Colorado's Dan Hinote's hip check along the boards sent Detroit forward Niklas Kronwall to the dressing room with a knee injury.
